Elections

Locally, our League is collaborating with students and faculty of Whatcom Community College to present a community conversation discussing the primary process for the presidential, state and local races. The program,“Pizza, Primaries, and Politics,” will take place in the Syre Auditorium on the WCC campus starting at 5:30 on April 11. Its goals are to 1) discuss how our primary elections work now, 2) explore how the process might be improved, and 3) to encourage participation.

Book group

Book group members will be meeting in person at the Skylark Cafe in Fairhaven on March 27 at 4:30 pm. Our March read is “How to Stand Up to a Dictator: The Fight for our Future” by Maria Ressa. In this memoir, the writer talks about her amazing personal and professional life as an investigative journalist. She is a passionate crusader against disinformation and the dangers of social media.

Civics Education

The Bellingham Public Schools are purchasing 500 copies of The State We’re In, the Washington League’s civics textbook, in its version for grades 3-5. This purchase is encouraging for many reasons, primarily because it means that children in the Bellingham schools will be learning about good citizenship early on, and doing it through a book that is inclusive in dealing with tribal governments as well as state, local, and national governments.

The March 18 Zoom meeting, News Literacy for an Election Year, will focus on news and information in our current political environment.

How important is voting? Important enough for League member Paula and her husband Mike to make a sizable donation to the Whatcom Community College Athletic Program on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Bellingham/Whatcom County. The donation comes with a banner promoting https://votewa.gov that has been hung on the fence surrounding WCC’s athletic field. Soccer players and their fans at WCC will be reminded of how easy it is to register to vote and update their registration.
