Reading Banned Books

Published on 6/13/2025
At our upcoming July 30 meeting, the book group members will discuss banned books.  On the American Library Association website I discovered that over the past few years there has been a “Sharp spike in censorship attempts at libraries.”  Many of the challenges to whether a book should be removed are done by pressure groups advocating to suppress information about some aspect of our culture or history.

The League has a long-standing principle in defense of individual liberties and in support of citizen participation and so it opposes book bans in libraries and other public institutions. (LWVUS Impact on Issues Guide to Public Policy Positions).

Book group members can select a book of interest that has been challenged or banned and share their impressions, why they believe it has been banned, and why they think it is or is not important reading.  This should be a lively discussion!

Nancy Fisher-Allison shared a resource from the American Library Association.  You can find the 10 most frequently challenged books of 2024 with more comprehensive lists of books that have been banned at the bottom of the website page:

Book group member, Donna Meehan, shared another list from the Velshi Banned Book Club.

The book group meets on the last Wednesday of alternate months at the Skylark Cafe in Fairhaven.

Please register so we know how many will attend and so you can receive an automated reminder about the meeting.
