As we experience a significant jump in League membership, it’s important to understand what nonpartisanship means for all members of the League of Women Voters. Most new (and old) members have come to the League hoping to find a way to engage in the political process and avoid the deep political division that threatens our 250 year history of democracy. We are all on information overload and in this uniquely stressful time, that can be a real challenge.
While the League encourages our members and all Americans to be civically active, it’s important to understand that what makes the League different is that it is not about political parties or candidates. The League’s number one priority is protecting the right to vote and encouraging voter participation. Our second priority is advocating for good policies that align with our many positions on issues. Interestingly, our positions very rarely change, even as political parties change their stances on these issues.
When participating as a member, it’s important to keep in mind that there may be someone in the room who supports a party, candidate or position that differs from yours and to:
-
Remove your political party hat
-
Encourage open, respectful discussion
-
Not refer to candidates or parties.
-
Stick to issues or institutions. Some examples:
Refer to the president or executive branch instead of Trump.
Instead of Bob Ferguson, use the Governor’s office
When talking about the policies of RFK Jr, use Health and Human Service
Be curious. Remember, knowing all perspectives results in good public policy.
With strict adherence to our nonpartisanship and diversity, equity and inclusion policies, the League will continue to be respected, effective, and viable for another 120 years.
