Welcoming Immigrants - Study and Consensus
About this event

This member consensus event will begin with a panel discussion about how Whatcom County is welcoming immigrants.
Immigration Lawyer & Bellingham Council member Hannah Stone will update us about Bellingham's new work group to review enforcement policies and ensure the city is following the Keep Washington Working Act. Izabel Meaker, Executive Director, Family Engagement, at Bellingham Public Schools, will explain how the school district is meeting needs of immigrant students and families.
The Keep Washington Working legislation affirmed the state's compelling interest to protect the rights and dignity of all residents and support immigrants’ role in the workplace. The recently published League Report identifies the benefits immigrants provide as well as the barriers they face with regard to economic opportunities, language facilitation and skills acquisition, social inclusion and civic engagement.
At this meeting we will discuss specific questions and discover member agreement on the issues raised. We will also consider how our League might be involved in the community to support immigrants as they become engaged citizens. The report we are reading focuses on several categories of immigrants including naturalized citizens, legal permanent residents, those who have temporary status, refugees, and those who are not unauthorized.
